MIAMI (AP) ? Dwyane Wade knew during pregame warmups that the Miami Heat were going to have a long night. By the end of the first quarter, the Memphis Grizzlies let everyone else know that Wade was right.

Rudy Gay scored 17 points, Zach Randolph had 14 points and 14 rebounds off the bench, and the Grizzlies put seven players in double figures to snap Miami's 17-game home winning streak by beating the Heat 97-82 on Friday night.

Memphis led wire-to-wire, the first team to do that on Miami's home floor since Boston on Nov. 11, 2010.

"A great team win from the beginning to the end," said Memphis guard Gilbert Arenas, who scored 12 points. "We played hard. We outplayed them. They missed shots they normally make but we were there for every single one of them."

Mike Conley and Marreese Speights each scored 15, and Marc Gasol and O.J. Mayo added 10 apiece for the Grizzlies, who have won six of eight.

LeBron James finished with 21 points, six assists and six rebounds for the Heat, who failed in a bid to match the franchise's longest home win streak, set in the 2004-05 season. Miami committed 11 turnovers in the first quarter ? its most in any period since Feb. 14, 2006 ? and never recovered.

"When we turn the ball over, we're not that good," James said. "We understand that. We know that. We don't care when we have attack turnovers, guys getting into the lane and trying to make plays for others and make a turnover. We had a few careless ones. We had easy layups, a few crosscourt passes. Just careless."

Wade scored 20 points, Chris Bosh added 19 and Terrel Harris scored 10 for Miami, which last lost at home on Jan. 22 to Milwaukee.

Miami (39-15) fell three games behind Chicago (43-13) in the race for the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Heat have 12 games left, the Bulls have 10, and the teams go head-to-head twice more before the postseason begins.

"They just beat us," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Really, the tale was that first quarter. ... The lack of concentration and focus in that first quarter, we couldn't make up for that."

The Heat struggled shooting the ball again, finishing at 40 percent.

It was the second time in two weeks that Memphis got seven players into double figures. Another good sign for the Grizzlies: Arenas had been 3 for 13 from 3-point range in his first six games with Memphis, but was 4 for 5 on Friday.

Memphis came into the night only two games out of fourth in the Western Conference, and coach Lionel Hollins talked beforehand about the importance of getting sharper heading into the postseason.

His team must have listened, because it came out flying.

"The first time I looked up at the scoreboard we were up 15 points," Hollins said. "We were playing well and we had a lot of people do a lot of good things."

The Grizzlies led 25-12 after the first quarter behind nine points from Gay. By halftime, the lead was 48-32, the second-lowest scoring first half for the Heat since the first game of the Big Three era, the opener at Boston last season.

"They did a great job," said Wade, who noted he feared even during the pregame layup line that energy was going to be lacking. "We beat ourselves as well. ... Just one of those nights."

Just about every number imaginable for the Heat in the early going was bad.

Wade missed two dunks in the first half, shooting 1 for 7. Midway through the second quarter, Bosh was shooting 4 for 5 and Harris 2 for 2 off the bench ? while everyone else in a Miami uniform was shooting 1 for 17 at that point.

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? An 80-year-old woman with little flying experience knew her husband had died after he fell unconscious at the controls of a small plane, yet she remained calm as she landed the aircraft at a northeastern Wisconsin airport, her son said Tuesday.

In a phone interview with The Associated Press, James Collins said he's also a pilot and had helped his mother Helen Collins via radio as the Cessna twin-engine plane began running out of gas Monday evening. Another pilot also took to the skies to guide her to the ground at Cherryland Airport, near Sturgeon Bay ? about 150 miles north of Milwaukee.

He said his mother took lessons to take off and land about 30 years ago at her husband's urging, in case something happened to him, but never got her license. She has flown hundreds of hours by his side.

"At one point she didn't even want the wingman to go up," he said. "She said, 'Don't you guys think I could do this on my own? Don't you have confidence in me?' She was calmer than everybody on the ground. She had it totally under control."

They were coming back from their second home in Marco Island, Fla. for Easter, Collins said. His 81-year-old father, John Collins, had a heart attack about seven minutes from landing at Cherryland Airport and had called for her before he became unconscious, Collins said. She had called 911 and that's when everyone came together to help her down.

The pilot who helped was Robert Vuksanovic, who lived just a mile from the airport, said Keith Kasbohm, director of Cherryland Airport. After getting the call from Kasbohm, Vuksanovic jumped in another plane owned by the Collins and flew up to meet the Cessna while instructing the novice on the radio.

"He felt it would be easier," Kasbohm said. "With him alongside of her he could control her speed and altitude" before she attempted a landing.

Collins said his mother knew her husband had died after she unsuccessfully tried to get him back into his seatbelt, which he unbuckled before he collapsed.

He said one engine had completely run out of gas and the other had to be close to running out because it was sputtering. The nose-wheel collapsed upon landing and she skidded down the runway about 1,000 feet, but she worked the rudders to keep the plane straight.

"The amazing thing is she landed that plane on one engine," Collins said. "I don't know if there are a lot of trained pilots that could do that."

At a news conference Tuesday, Vuksanovic said he also experienced Helen Collins' confidence, WLUK-TV reported.

"She wanted to know if I was confident in her confidence," he said. "I said if you're confident then I'm confident, I think we can do this."

Collins said his mother was hospitalized on Tuesday with an injury to her vertebrae and a cracked rib but was doing well.

He said he stayed calm and focused because he had to help her.

"I already knew I lost my dad, I didn't want to lose my mom," he said. "It could have been both of them at once."

Collins described his mother's actions as unbelievable, answering their questions about air speed or the flaps. "You think she had done it all her life."

"Everybody is proud of her," he said. "I think she is a local hero for sure."

Torry Lautenbach, whose property is next to the airport, watched her land and estimated she circled the airport about 10 times.

"She did a really good job (landing the plane). It was amazing," Lautenbach said. "It took one bad hop and then it came back down and skidded."

Elizabeth Isham Cory, a spokeswoman with the Federal Aviation Administration, said John Collins had a current private pilot's license but couldn't immediately provide any details on how often he needed to get a medical exam. She said pilots can fly until they stop passing medical exams.

The Collins family, of Sturgeon Bay, own a small manufacturing company in Door County, authorities said. John Collins founded C & S Manufacturing in 1962, according to the company's website.

Why the difference? Presumably because it costs energy to send blood to your tail, where it then cools as it sends out its infrared signal. Thus, in evolutionary terms, it only makes sense to incur that cost if it has an advantage. Since gopher snakes can't sense in the infrared, why bother?

Of course, with respect to the current findings, it suggests that both flagging and infrared decoy measures are important to a ground squirrel, not just the infrared part. Otherwise, why would they bother flagging? Perhaps just because they have fun annoying snakes...

And while the snakes might come off as just dumb reptiles in this story, let's not forget that those infrared sensing organs are pretty amazing as well. They have limited spatial resolution, but extraordinary temperature resolution, down to 0.001K. Indeed, once upon a time as a PhD student, I calculated that if you strapped a rattlesnake to the back of a 4 metre infrared telescope (!), it could detect the signal from Eta Carinae, one of the brightest infrared stars in the sky. Strap on thousands of rattlesnakes and count when each one rattled its tail, and you could take images:-)

Working in mice, scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have devised a treatment that prevents the optic nerve injury that occurs in glaucoma, a neurodegenerative disease that is a leading cause of blindness.

Researchers increased the resistance of optic nerve cells to damage by repeatedly exposing the mice to low levels of oxygen similar to those found at high altitudes. The stress of the intermittent low-oxygen environment induces a protective response called tolerance that makes nerve cells including those in the eye less vulnerable to harm.

The study, published online in Molecular Medicine, is the first to show that tolerance induced by preconditioning can protect against a neurodegenerative disease.

Stress is typically thought of as a negative phenomenon, but senior author Jeffrey M. Gidday, PhD, associate professor of neurological surgery and ophthalmology, and others have previously shown that the right kinds of stress, such as exercise and low-oxygen environments, can precondition cells and induce changes that make them more resistant to injury and disease.

Scientists previously thought tolerance in the central nervous system only lasted for a few days. But last year Gidday developed a preconditioning protocol? that extended the effects of tolerance from days to months. By exposing mice to hypoxia, or low oxygen concentrations, several times over a two-week period, Gidday and colleagues triggered an extended period of tolerance. After preconditioning ended, the brain was protected from stroke damage for at least 8 weeks.

"Once we discovered tolerance could be extended, we wondered whether this protracted period of injury resistance could also protect against the slow, progressive loss of neurons that characterizes neurodegenerative diseases," Gidday says.

To find out, Gidday turned to an animal model of glaucoma, a condition linked to increases in the pressure of the fluid that fills the eye. The only treatments for glaucoma are drugs that reduce this pressure; there are no therapies designed to protect the retina and optic nerves from harm.

Scientists classify glaucoma as a neurodegenerative disease based on how slowly and progressively it kills retinal ganglion cells. The bodies of these cells are located in the retina of the eye; their branches or axons come together in bundles and form the optic nerves. Scientists don't know if damage begins in the bodies or axons of the cells, but as more and more retinal ganglion cells die, patients experience peripheral vision loss and eventually become blind.

For the new study, Yanli Zhu, MD, research instructor in neurosurgery, induced glaucoma in mice by tying off vessels that normally allow fluid to drain from the eye. This causes pressure in the eye to increase. Zhu then assessed how many cell bodies and axons of retinal ganglion cells were intact after three or 10 weeks.

The investigators found that normal mice lost an average of 30 percent of their retinal ganglion cell bodies after 10 weeks of glaucoma. But mice that received the preconditioning before glaucoma-inducing surgery lost only 3 percent of retinal ganglion cell bodies.

"We also showed that preconditioned mice lost significantly fewer retinal ganglion cell axons," Zhu says.

Gidday is currently investigating which genes are activated or repressed by preconditioning. He hopes to identify the changes in gene activity that make cells resistant to damage.

"Previous research has shown that there are literally hundreds of survival genes built into our DNA that are normally inactive," Gidday says. "When these genes are activated, the proteins they encode can make cells much less vulnerable to a variety of injuries."

Identifying specific survival genes should help scientists develop drugs that can activate them, according to Gidday.

Neurologists are currently conducting clinical trials to see if stress-induced tolerance can reduce brain damage after acute injuries like stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage or trauma.

Gidday hopes his new finding will promote studies of tolerance's potential usefulness in animal models of Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions.

"Neurons in the central nervous system appear to be hard-wired for survival," Gidday says. "This is one of the first steps in establishing a framework for how we can take advantage of that metaphorical wiring and use positive stress to help treat a variety of neurological diseases."

Well, I suppose it was bound to happen. Just one day before HTC and Sprint kick off their so-called collaboration event in New York City, the team at PocketNow has gotten their hands on what they claim is the first press shot of the device to be unveiled: the EVO One. The device?s supposed internals sure seem to be a treat, at least according to a tip that Android Central received a few days ago. Former Congressman Louis Stokes in favor of Mayor Frank Jackson's idea for Cleveland schools

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland needs the kinds of major improvements to its schools that Mayor Frank Jackson is proposing, former U.S. Rep. Louis Stokes said Friday.

"This is the time we must put everything aside and say, 'How do we give kids the education they're entitled to?' " said Stokes, who served in Congress for three decades.

Now retired, Stokes said he decided to speak about Jackson's plan after hearing the mayor talk recently and being impressed with his sincerity about wanting to improve the schools.

"I support the mayor," Stokes said. "I think what he's doing is displaying real leadership."

While Stokes declined to pick sides in the debate between Jackson and the Cleveland Teachers Union over parts of the mayor's plan, he praised Jackson's goal of having more students in quality schools and his courage for pressing the issue.

He called Jackson's plan "a long, tall step toward being the right way" to achieving that goal.

He also praised the union for negotiating with the mayor on several difficult issues, including the layoff and recall of teachers. He said he expects more adjustments in the plan before it is introduced in the state legislature and again as it is debated in Columbus.

"They're going to have give and take, and it's going to work," he said.

But he objected to the union regularly comparing Jackson's plan to Senate Bill 5, a law that restricted collective bargaining and was repealed by voters in November.

Stokes called Senate Bill 5 "the most reprehensible piece of legislation I've ever seen." He said comparing Jackson's plan to it is a "mischaracterization" that "clouds the atmosphere."

"It does not take away collective-bargaining rights, as Senate Bill 5 did," he said. "It alters the means of engaging in collective bargaining, but it doesn't ban it like Senate Bill 5."

P.E.I. golf course fails to attract buyer

It seems no one wants to operate a P.E.I. government-owned nine-hole golf course and driving range at Brudenelle.

The provincial government didn't get a single response to a request for proposals by its Friday deadline.

Government officials say the course, called the Divine Nine, hasn't been making money and the province will not reopen it.

Kevin Jenkins, director of corporate services for the Department of Tourism, said he was hoping someone would step forward to operate the course.

"The golf course business is certainly a tough one these days, particularly for nine-hole courses, Jenkins said.

"We had to go to a public RFP just to test the market," he added. "I don't know if it's a huge surprise that there is no interest, but certainly we had to go through that step at least."

The province felt a private operator might have been able to run the course as a profitable enterprise.

Even though the course will not open this year, the government will continue to look for a private operator, Jenkins said.
